It takes a bit of getting used to, as most puzzlers of this kind are, but before long you’re rocking and rolling with it. And your friends and family might not be able to pry it out of your hands until you drop from exhaustion.
Graphics: 9
While there’s not a lot of intricacy to the game’s design, the creators kept it fresh with lots of sweet glowing effects and psychedelic swirling in the background. And when the pieces change to a different color scheme and look, it’ll turn you upside-down.
Audio: 8.8
Again, you don’t expect much from this kind of game, and while Lumines Live!’s audio does have a repetitive nature, the fact that it’s tied to your moves as well as the gameplay makes it like you’re helping create a custom beat every time you play.
Longevity: 8.9
There’s no end to the game, no set number of levels or end boss to beat. It’s just a matter of challenging yourself to do better—and if you want to keep pushing for higher scores and block-beat others in competition, you’ll keep playing Lumines Live! for a while.
Innovation: 8.5
The game doesn’t require elaborate 3-D graphics, a Hollywood script or a movie tie-in to make it happen. Just as Tetris could have been released on the same hardware as Pong and Space Invaders doesn’t make it less innovative, and Lumines Live! takes the puzzle concept that much farther.
